Dr. Innocent Nyamwasa

Dr. Nyamwasa is the current Division Manager of Food Safety Monitoring, Inspection and Licensing at Rwanda FDA. He holds a PhD in Microbiology applied to Food protection obtained at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences/Wuhan Institute of Virology, Master’s Degree in Agricultural Entomology and Pest and Diseases Control (Food crop Pest and diseases Control) obtained at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural/Food sciences. Upon Joining Rwanda FDA in 2021, he also received extensive Master Course training in Food toxicology and risk assessment at Wageningen University along with comprehensive training on Food Safety control based on the US FDA Curriculum & FAO/WHO Food control system.

He has a rich experience in food protection from farm to fork.  Before joining Rwanda FDA, Dr Innocent worked as an independent Lead Consultant of Wageningen University & Research(WUR) through a joint research project between WUR and Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority(RICA). The consultancy focused on elucidating Pest Control Products management (Mainly Pesticides) and associated health concerns in Rwanda. He also worked in International Research Organizations such as CIAT, served as a visiting Lecturer at the University of Rwanda (Master’s Program) and spent 7 years of exposure at the Institute of Food Plant Protection of China.   

Dr Nyamwasa’s expertise spans crop protection to food safety. He has published several scientific articles in International peer-reviewed SCI Journals. His research interest focuses on public health protection through food safety regulation.
